Yavin IV (like Dagobah and Tatooine) is saturated with dark side energy, this allowed the Rebels to hide their base from the Emperor’s force senses. In the extended universe this former Massassi temple becomes the Jedi Temple/academy under Grand Master Luke Skywalker. Another close up of a Y-Wing at the Yavin IV Temple. ) A close up of the Y-Wing cockpit fuselage. A grounded Y-Wing gives a good indication of scale, also featuring the strongest mechanic at the Yavin Temple, able to lift an X-wing by a single strut! ‘The force you say? meh.’. ![]() AN S3 Y-wing forward view (Endor) and an imminent saving for the Imperial pensions department! Instrument panels A4 (Yavin). It’s Titanium reinforced Alusteel hull is rated at 40 Resistance Units compared to 20 RU for an X-wing and 15 RU for a TIE.Ī Y-wing cockpit has a distinct look and can be easily identified by the amount of visible ducting and shape of the back window, the cockpits in ‘A New Hope’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’ have a very different design (S3 type in ‘pilots’ section below, see the B-Wing description under ‘Ships and Fighters of the Rebel Alliance’ for a direct comparison of the various fighter cockpits) the differences in style between the two movies are put down to those in ‘A new Hope’ being the A4 type while those in ROTJ are the S3. The BTL-Y Wing can take more of a pounding than an X-Wing (if it’s not being shot by a Sith Lord wielding the force!) It’s Chempat shield system has a rating of 75 SBD compared to the X-Wings 50. Y-Wings are even agile enough to negotiate the Death Star’s superstructure. Grey Leader evades heavy fire in his BTL-S3 at Endor. A BTL-A4 Y-wing avenges the death of an A-Wing, piloted by Red 2 during the Battle of Endor. Later scenes at the Battle of Endor (Return of the Jedi) show the Y-wing to be more agile, dogfighting and winning against TIE Fighters with it’s two forward mounted Taim and Bak Laser Cannons (Y-wings can carry either the IX-4 or IX-5 model). ‘…Stay on target!!!….LOOSEN UP!’ BOOOM! That didn’t work out well for them! Fabritech SI 5g7 “Quickscan” imaging system which worked with the Fabritech ANc 2.7 tracking computer and a sophisticated sensor suite (mounted under domes on the front of the engine pods) to guide bombs and torpedoes, pilots were given the order to ignore enemy fighters and ‘Stay on target….’ (‘They’re too close!’….). The low survival rate of BTL-A4’s at the battle of Yavin added to this reputation but defeat was down to the focus of the pilots who refused to evade fighters in a desperate attempt to keep their targeting computers locked on and deliver their payload, many X-wings suffered the same fate at the hands of Darth Vader. Perhaps unfairly the Y-wing was known as sluggish and ungainly (which is true compared to an X-wing) but it’s modified Koensayr R-2000 Ion Fission Engines gave it a top speed of 80 Megalights (MGLT) to the B-wings 90, but it out accelerates the more sophisticated bomber (Y-wing accelerates at 2,700 G and 1000 km/h in atmosphere, B-wing only pulls 2,390 G and 950 km/h, both can travel faster in atmosphere if shielded). A BTL-A4 Y-Wing escorted by X-wings during the ‘Battle of Yavin’ in ‘A New Hope’ To ensure safe delivery of their payload they often go in to battle with a fighter escort but are more than capable of operating without one. ![]() These features made the ship appropriate for bombing runs against larger targets. It’s ability to carry 8 proton torpedoes (and to fire two at a time through it’s Arakyd Industries Flex Tube Launchers which are mounted on the bottom of the cockpit fuselage, where it meets the fighters ‘neck’) as well as a powerful proton bomb and an ArMek SW-4 twin Ion cannon turret (the rotating turret above the cockpit, Ion Cannons disrupt shields and electronic systems). The Y-Wing was designed as a multi-purpose Starfighter. A Y-Wing with armour casing intact from ‘Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections’. When released from the production line Y-Wings were armoured all over but problems with overheating, the need to add extra systems and the regular occurrence of system failures resulted in the rebels ditching the casing and running the fighter with it’s components exposed. ![]() The BTL-A4 (A one seater) and BTL-S3 (the older of the two which had an extra seat for a gunner) Y-Wings were developed from an old model (The BTL-B) that served in the clone wars.
